Month End Gedcom and Update News

Gedcom Comments Off

The month end Gedcom has just been uploaded and contains lots of new information and additions which are as follows

We have reached 8999 people this week so we’ve come along way since we first started this tree – I can’t remember now exactly how long ago it was but it keeps growing

There are only a couple of family names that have really been looked added to this month and they are Cohen (thanks to Gerald Cohen for the info he supplied) and Noyek (which I managed to complete from a family web site I found

I keep checking family names all the time using Ancestry-Findmypast-Freebmd-Lancashirebmd-and the 1911 census and every time I seem to find new information especially on Lancashirebmd for marriage details – if you would like to check your family names I’m up to the start of  Leon family so have please have a look and let me know how I’m doing ie if anything need changing (remember I can’t do it all on my own – need some pointers in the right direction sometimes)

Sandra Demmy sent a nice picture of  her daughter and son-in-law and grandson’s on the occassion of Iddo’s barmitzvah on the 4th of  January and we would like to wish them mazel-tov

Danny has promised that next month he will look into the exciting Google Earth – so watch this space for more detail on this as it happens

Guess this all for this posting – back to work on more research till next time

Ok  the month end gedcom has been uploaded a little earlier than anticipated but we will not worry too much about that just now

Hyam has named and linked in 23 new picture (Thanks Hyam once again for all your hard work on this – we know it is time consuming but it’s worth it to all of  us) the names included are Bridger-Knopf-Glicher-Weiner-Pavion-Preger and Michaelovitch apart from the 1st two names all the rest are headstone pictures

The latest Knopf birth added the other week now has a name Rochel Esther and I’m sure she will appreciate this living history of her ancestry in the future as I’m sure all the young generations will

Now that we are out of sink with uploads you will really have to watch this space for the next one as they might happen less than we have done in the past or maybe they will be appearing more often this will now depend on Danny doing the uploads and letting me know they have been done so that I can still blog and tell you all what has been and is going on

Don’t forget we still need your input to help make each person’s record as complete as possible and just a little reminder of the sort of stuff we would like – pictures of any description – documents again of anything you might consider valuable – dates and places of  birth-marriage and deaths etc – by now you all know the score ‘CHECK YOUR OWN FAMILY RECORDS – LOOK AT ANYBODY YOU ONLY KNOW BY NAME’ you never know you could have knowledge of something we don’t have

Once again please enjoy what you see until next time

Glad you have been working hard updating cos I have a lot more information for you on the Bridger/Manning families. I am sure Sylvia and I will be ’skyping’ away. I think I have also spotting a spark of interest in some of the ‘younger’ family members in their ancestry so hopefully all the work we are doing will inspire future generations.

Mid Month Update – Read Full Posting

General News Comments Off

This is just a little update as the gedcom is being uploaded mid month as promised – the reason being that over the weekend I had a look at my headstone folders and found that i could now place at least 10 or more to names in the tree

This was interesting as the pictures were taken back in april 2008 at Ursmtson-Agecroft-Crumpsall and Blackley Cemeteries and I couldn’t match them up with anyone – so you can now see that in two years we’ve come along way –  Hyam has them at the moment and will be linking them in so at the next gedcom update i’ll let you know which family names have been added

They say ‘you have to speculate to accumulate’ and I guess that’s what I did and it’s paid off  - roll on summer I want to get out there again and if any one in Manchester fancies a sunday stroll  round a cemetery with me just let me know and we can arrange it (Liz I know you’re always pleased to come)

Watch out for the main month end update in a week or so

New Addition To The Tree

General News Comments Off

Just a quickie – At 7.25  this evening I  had a message from Liz Knopf  to say there was a new family member that needed adding to the tree and that she had just been born – although we don’t have a name yet her parents are Anthony and Carly Knopf and Grandparents being Elliot and Elizabeth Knopf  - Elliot a the brother-in-law  to Liz – Mazel-tov to all the family

Liz felt a mention should be made that it is probably the fasted  notification of a birth to the tree – this now takes the number of people to 8922 and growing

There will be an upload of the gedcom next weekend

How to register to comment

How do I...? Comments Off

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register for the blog in order to be able to leave comments on posts. Note that the online tree and the blog are two separate systems, so having a login for the online tree doesn’t mean you automatically have a login for the blog as well – you’ll have to register for this separately. There’s nothing stopping you choosing the same login details for both, though!

First, click on the “logged in” link:

You’ll then see the log in screen – if you’re not registered yet then click on “Register” at the bottom:

On the register screen, enter the username you’d like to use, and your email address:

Click the blue “Register” button, and then check your email. You should receive an email like this:

Don’t worry that the password it’s assigned for you is complete garbage; you’ll have a chance to change it in a moment. Copy and paste this password back into the login screen, after entering your username:

and then click “Log In”. The first time you log in, you’ll see your profile screen (the top bit of which is shown here)

scroll down to the bottom of the profile screen and you’ll see a section where you can change your password to something more memorable:

Feel free to add any other information about yourself onto your profile. Click “Update Profile” when you’re finished. Scroll back up to the top of the screen and click “Visit site”

and now, you’ll see the comment entry box, where you can leave your comment.

The next time you need to log in, you can just enter your username and your chosen password, and you’ll go straight to the comment screen. Once you’re logged in you can click on your name to get back to your profile screen (i.e. where it says “logged in as dan2″ in the screenshot above.

Changes to commenting

General News 2 Comments

We recently changed the layout of the blog to show the comments on the main page underneath each post. This is an attempt to prompt more people to comment on the blog, and it’s had an unfortunate side-effect of attracting some spam comments as well. At the moment we’re only getting three or four spam comments a day, but I’m sure if we don’t do anything about it then the number will increase.

So, we’ve changed it so that in order to comment on the blog you have to register for an account. Below each post it says “You must be logged in to post a comment” – click on “logged in” and you’ll see the login screen. If you don’t have an account click “register” at the bottom of that screen and follow the instructions.

The first comment you leave will have to be approved by one of the blog administrators, but once you’ve had a comment approved then all future comments you leave will appear on the blog straight away.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but I’m sure you know how much of a curse spam is these days!

This comment is really to test out the new system to make sure it works – as you see it does – so no excuses now make use of the comment option.
Ruth it was interesting to find out where some of your more distant ancestors are buried – I found Jack and Rebecca’s (Krotoszynski/Davis) headstone in London and photographed it for the tree – perhaps we can get pictures of these more distant headstones one day.

Reply to being registered to submit comments. Having spoken to Danny, he admits that the screen to register is a bit confusing so will try to make it easier for everyone to register. Keep up the good work, it is amazing how fast the tree is growing.

Month End Gedcom – Please Read Full Posting

Gedcom 1 Comment

The month end gedcom has just been uploaded and includes amendments-documents-and headstone pictures being added to the the following families Berger/Needoff/Sassoon/Stone – Laserson/Gertz – Kreike/Alexander/Silcove – Halpern/Demmy-Edwards/Kogen/Krakow

I again sent out reminders to those people who haven’t signed onto the tree within 6-12 months and have had some responses – nice to hear from Barry Posner-Adrian Koskie who are both still very interested and hopefully more info might come our way from them

Once again thanks must go to Paul Traynor who now has a subscription to Jewish Data whereby he can pull headstone pictures for us of family who died and are buried in the states (if you know of any of your ancestors that might fall into this category) let me know and  we’ll see what we can find

Hyam again has worked wonders again as he manages to add the pictures more or less as fast as Paul sends them – and not only that he’s found lots of documents and pictures relating to his own personal history (ie studying pharmacy-pre reg-post reg and setting up his own shop) all of which now appear on the tree – this is just an example of the kind of things we need – they are priceless

A word of warning ‘never throw anything out before looking at it carefully’ it might not seem useful now but in the future our younger generation might appreciate an insight into the lives and history of their ancestors

Please help us to keep this living history alive by sending anything you have that is of interest-the tree seem to be getting updated now at least twice a month

Next update due around the middle of February – so watch this space for details

Mid Month Gedcom Update and General News – Please read the full post

Gedcom Comments Off

As promised I’ve just uploaded the latest gedcom so all that was mentioned last time should all tie in

The 1st birth for 2010 has been added this is a grandson for Jeremy and Jacqueline Michelson and a greatgrandson for Cyril and Elsie Silcove

Information in general is coming in thick and fast from all sides including Tresman – Da Costa-Seaberg and Mayorcas this is really great and we welcome anything else from any connected families

Interesting findings in the last day or so are headstone pictures from the States and this is due to Paul Traynor kindly subscribing to Jewish Data web site and I’ve now worked out some of the Kogen family (Thanks Paul – we really do appreciate all you do for us)

Hyam worked well again with the pictures and documents and he doen’t know it yet but he has more to sort out

I am still trying to syncronize the two list of users ie those who get notification on here and those who are users on the php site – in order to do this I sent through php emails to everyone who hasn’t logged in at all asking if they still want to be part of the group and have a few replies – I will in the next few days do the same for those not logged in during the last 12 months -then the last 6 months to see how people feel – hopefully this will lead to both lists ending up with the same number of users – so once again I ask those of you who haven’t logged in recently to do so and if you’ve forgotten your details please email me and I’ll send you your details

Next update due the end of the month – Watch this space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

General News 2 Comments

I’ve just been looking at Family Tree of the Jewish People and I noticed that it was in 2007 that I last submitted a gedcom

I thought that maybe if it was put on there again we might get some feedback from others so I uploaded it just now – it might take a few days for it to appear and we’ll see if anything comes of it

There is still a lot of gaps that we need filling in and those of you who have recently requested access to the tree please come back with some information or point us in the right direction and we will do the research (you know who you are but just a reminder – Tresman-Mayorcas-Lister-Kahan-Cowen) we really do need your input

The next gedcom update will be at the end of the month when all the pictures that Hyam has been adding will link in and family names that have had updates too

As we have just started a new year could I please ask once again that you try and log on the online tree just once so I can see who of you are really still interested (is it really 12 months ago since I asked the same question – seems like only yesterday)

We are still waiting on Danny to reveal all about Google Earth – I’m sure he’ll lets us know sooner rather than later what it is all about

I’ve a complete novice at this but trying to find my way around the tree and spotting places where I can supply missing information. I am in touch with Liz as regards specific family information which she is welcome to add to the tree. I will try to forward some pictures.

Was in Haifa in December and met up with John Tresman, son of David Tresman and brother of Robert. David was one of David Tresman Caminer’s uncles. John has also done a lot of research on the family tree and traced stuff going back several generations. I’ve put him in touch with Sylvia.

    No more now…it’s late… Shabbat Shalom………Pamela

Hi Pamela you will find that this gets compulsive so be prepared!! It’s nice to renew contact with family members which I have done with Pamela and David via the tree, plus contact with second cousin once removed Martin Da Costa. Its all out there to be found so lets hear from more of you this year, family information is invaluable and you may have that snippet of detail that points us in the right direction. Sylvia and I are a bit like sniffer dogs, once on the scent we are hard to distract. Throw us some bones and lets see what happens.
Happy New Year to you all
    Liz

Year End Gedcom Update – Please Read The Full Posting

General News 1 Comment

Hope you all saw the New Year Message – I Didn’t quite make the gedcom update before the end of the year  so this will be the 1st of 2010

This week I finally reached my goal of getting to the end of the surname list looking for marriages using both Lancashire and Yorkshire BMD – just wish there was the same for the London area – maybe in time it may come

Hyam has added at least 50 new pictures in the last week or so and there will be more to come – hopefully over the coming year you will all continue to contribute family pictures-documents-and if possible headstones as this really helps to keep the tree as a living history for our future generations

A few family names that have had details added to them in the last couple of months Booth-DaCosta-Davis-Demmy-Holt-Landes-Kaufman-Knopf-Manackerman-Marks-Seaberg-Showman and Winfield

Once again we would ask you check your own families – see if anything needs amending or adding – we Liz-Paul-Hyam and myself can only do so much – we need pointers from you (Liz and I will walk cemeteries for headstones  if we know where)

At present there are 78 of you who recieve this notification but according to PHPGedview (the online tree) there are 87 users listed – I know in the past some people have chosen not to recieve notifications but still wanted to have access and this is fine by us  so you can see we have come along way over the years and if memory serves me correctly this blog has been running since 2006 – can we keep it going another 10 years – we probably can if more of you would use the comments and really try and make it more interactive

In the next couple of weeks we be telling you about the exciting things going to be happening on Google Earth so watch this space for details

Great to see the update being posted on the first day of a new year. Growing up, I was always taught that what you do on the first day of the year is a sign of what you will be doing the rest of the year. So…looks like we will seeing a lot of updates and new photos and details coming available online with the help of everyone out there.
